Painted Canvases showcase Horace Mann Community

Students at the Horace Mann School celebrated their community by creating a school-wide mural. Each grade level painted canvases that are connected with a unifying theme.

  • Kindergarten and Grade 1: Landscape Inspired by Native American Art

  • Grade 2 and 3: Gyotaku Fish Print Seascape

  • Grade 4 and 5: Mola-Inspired Paintings

The project was the inspiration of classroom teacher Elizabeth Collier and art teacher Lynette Bruce, and was supported by a Melrose Education Foundation boost grant. As students prepared and created their individual classroom paintings, the unified mural generated conversations around various cultures. The project used art as a bridge to similarities and differences and provided a lasting visual reminder of what brings us together. The mural will be displayed in the building going forward to reinforce the shared Horace Mann School community.
